GOTHA GENIAL?! Flashes of genius and perennial favourites from 1250 years.

26 April 2025 – 30 March 2026, Herzogliches Museum
Curator: Sonja Gruhlke

A fascinating journey through time awaits visitors to the Gotha Ducal Museum next year: The special exhibition ‘1250 Years of Gotha’ allows guests to delve deep into the history of the unique residential city, which has much more to offer than the imposing Friedenstein Palace. In the exhibition, the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha shows how the traditions and innovations of Gotha have shaped the image of Thuringia and the wider world. Using important historical artefacts, documents and eyewitness accounts, visitors discover the major political, craft and cultural developments that made Gotha the birthplace of pioneering ideas. The exhibition not only focuses on well-known personalities, but also allows hidden voices to speak, reporting on their everyday lives in Gotha dialect. ‘Gotha genius!?’ shows political upheavals, “typical Gotha”, international influences, lively club life and ingenious inventions that still characterise the city today.

Central Exhibition of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar in the theme year "Faust"

When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe came to Weimar in 1775, he already had parts of ‘Faust’ in his pocket. The work occupied him for the rest of his life. In it, he processed the knowledge and questions of his time and wrote poetry at the height of his literary ability. But how relevant is ‘Faust’ for us today? In the 2025 theme year, Weimar will become a Faust workshop.
Does ‘Faust’ concern us today? - The central exhibition of the 2025 theme year at the Schiller Museum explores this question.
